The Dubai Health Authority Signed the “Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology” at the 6th Dubai Anaesthesia Conference and Exhibition

Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and President of the Dubai Health Authority, H.E. Eng. Essa Al Haj Al Maidoor  inaugurated on the 7th of March the 6th edition of the Dubai Anaesthesia Conference and Exhibition which was held at Crown Plaza Hotel.

This year, Dubai Anaesthesia revealed breakthroughs in Anaesthesiology and discussed the latest international innovations and developments in the fields of General Anaesthesia, Pain Management and the Perioperative Medicine.  It is the most prominent forum in the region dedicated for health care professionals and specialists and attracts participants from all corners of the world to discuss and learn the most updated developments in these fields through a number of intensive scientific sessions covering all related topics.

Dr. Mansour Nadhari, the Conference Chairman and the Consultant & Head of Anaesthesia Department at Rashid Hospital – Trauma Centre said: “Dubai Anaesthesia brings together over 800 Regional & International Anaesthesiologists, Anaesthetists, Doctors, Surgeons, Nurses & students in addition to Healthcare Specialists and professionals to discuss the development in Anaesthesia, Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine.”

Dr. Mansour Nadhari added: “More than 20 speakers from France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Thailand, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and UAE took part in this event, the interesting topics for this year included: Safety in Anaesthesia, Anaesthesia Outside the Operating Room, Anaesthesia for Bariatric Surgery, Obstetrics in Anaesthesia, Airway and Ventilation, Paediatric Anaesthesia, Trauma & Emergency Situations, Pain Management, Regional Anaesthesia and Ambulatory Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine.”

“Anesthesiology has become a very important specialty in the medical field which has witnessed successive developments in the history of modern medicine, and we are working diligently to introduce international experiences to our local and regional doctors which shall reflect positively on the patients, and I am confident that the agenda of this conference present a lot of benefits to the specialists and in return will reflect positively on our hospitals, medical clinics and most importantly patients.” Added Dr. Nadhari

The opening ceremony also included a signing of the “Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology” which was developed by the European Board of Anaesthesiology (EBA), aided by ESA, and launched during 2010. The “Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology” is a global initiative supported by political authorities, the WHO, the European Patient’s Forum, the medical-technical industry, the European Union of Medical Specialists, the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists, and more.

The declaration was signed by H.E. Eng. Essa Al Maidoor, Director-General of Dubai Health Authority, Prof. Dr. Paolo Pelosi, Past President of European Society of Anaesthesiology and Prof. Dr. Najib Al Khaja, Secretary General of Sheikh Hamdan Award for Medical Sciences.

Dr. Paolo Pelosi, the former President of ESA said: “Every year around 230 million patients undergo anaesthesia for major surgery in the world. Anaesthesiology is the key specialty in medicine to take up responsibility for achieving the goals listed in the Helsinki Declaration which will notably improve Patient Safety during surgical procedures in Dubai.”

Dr. Paolo added: “The Declaration has become a global initiative with broad support from national societies and health authorities. Patient safety is gaining the attention of the public, and the medical profession must draw on that enthusiasm and maintain the momentum from Helsinki.”

H.E. Eng. Essa Al Maidoor, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority was very delighted to announce the signing of the “Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology” during Dubai Anaesthesia 2013 which is one of the highly ranked events in the region. Dubai has taken the challenge by being able to refer to a European-agreed standard for the benefits of the patient undergoing anaesthesia or sedation for surgery and light procedures.

Dr. Abdul Salam Al Madani, the Executive Chairman of the Dubai Anaesthesia Conference and Exhibition and Chairman of INDEX Holding said at the opening ceremony: “we are keen to fulfil the directives of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minster of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minster of Finance and the Chairman of the Dubai Health Authority which calls for working on the development of Anesthesiology Departments in the UAE hospitals and focuses on training the local and resident doctors until they master the new innovations and techniques followed in the field of Anaesthesia and Pain Management.”

Moreover, more than 50 companies displayed their latest equipment, machinery and products in the exhibition area. The exhibition this year is more vibrant and interactive as a new feature was launched; the “Refresh & Learn”, where exhibitors have the opportunity to conduct practical workshops and live demonstrations in their booths.  The workshops were displayed simultaneously on screens located in the exhibition and conference halls. Well Lead and Parker Medical took advantage of this platform to enhance their presence in Dubai Anaesthesia 2013 and to increase awareness about avoiding trauma during intubation.” Added Dr. Al Madani

The Dubai Anaesthesia exhibition attracted more than 1000 visitors this year and gathered top scientists and experts in Anesthesiology under one roof where they discussed the latest techniques that shall increase the chances of healing, alleviate patient’s pain and improve health care services.
